Oral Cancer
Cancer of the oral cavity and throat accounts for more than 34,000 cases per year in the United States, resulting in approximately 8,000 deaths per year. Early detection and diagnosis is key in treating this type of cancer.
Thirty percent of oral cancers originate in the tongue; 17% in the lip; and 14% in the floor of the mouth. New evidence points to human papilloma virus 16 (the causative agent of certain genital warts) as the cause of cancers of the posterior mouth, including the tonsils, base of the tongue and throat.
Early detection is crucial. At Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implants, we offer a thorough, systematic examination of the mouth and neck that only takes a few minutes to detect these cancers at an early, curable stage. To make an appointment, please call (310)559-2940.
If you smoke or drink alcohol, it is especially important to get an examination. It is estimated that 75% of oral cancers are related to tobacco and alcohol use, and patients that smoke or drink should be checked often.
Oral cancer screening should include the following:
Evaluation of the lymph nodes of the neck and the jaws.
A thorough visual inspection of the lips, inner lining of the cheeks, and the enitre surface of the tongue, palate, and throat.
Palpation of the lips, cheeks, and tongue to rule out the presence of any lumps or masses.
A well trained dentist can detect changes that are suspicious so that they can take further action.
Suspicious lesions are those that appear suddenly and are hard and lumpy. If you have any lesions that appear suspicious to you, please schedule an appointment to have it evaluated immediately. Again the key to treating oral cancer is early detection.
