The Relationship between Oral and General Health

Oral health is often a barometer of an individual's general health. Recent studies have shown a significant correlation between oral infections (periodontal disease in particular) and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Because our nourishment is consumed orally, our mouths are constantly fighting an influx of food particles, bacteria, and other problem-causing debris. Our mouths serve as exceptionally welcoming environments to all kinds of bacteria and viruses, which can thrive there before entering our bodies and causing serious problems. If proper oral hygiene is not maintained, problems greater than just cavities or bad breath can arise.

For example, heart lesions can be traced back to infections caused by bacteria found in the mouth. Most of the time our immune systems can fight these infections off, but when our defenses are down, oral infections can compromise our overall health.

Individuals with damage to the oral mucosa or salivary dysfunction (which serve as natural defenses against pathogens) must also pay extra attention to their oral hygiene regimens.

The mouth's vulnerability to infection and its mirroring of overall health is why proper oral hygiene is so important. In some cases, your dentist may be able to spot problems with your health before your doctor does.

That's why regular dental cleanings are essential to spot, diagnose, and correct dental complications, so be sure to schedule checkups every 3-6 months. Regular dental cleanings, proper brushing technique, and daily flossing can help you ward off infections caused by the bacteria that barrages your mouth daily.

Although fewer cavities and fresher breath are some of the benefits proper dental care, it's important to remember that good oral hygiene affects a lot more than just your smile.
