Taking Your Child to the Dentist

Trips to the dentist are not our most eagerly anticipated occasions. And the anxiety that accompanies an impending visit can extend to your kids as well. That's why it's good to take a few extra steps when preparing your kids for a visit to the dentist.

I wrote this article to share some tips to having some would-be headaches alleviated from taking your kids to the dentist:

  • Address your child's concerns. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to your kids and the dentist. However, when some discomfort can be expected from the dental visit (e.g. a cavity needs to be filled), you can lessen anxiety by taking their mind off the impending visit. Offering rewards such as toys and treats for good behavior is a nice way to occupy their thoughts. Rewards also act as an incentive to behave bravely in the dentist's chair.

  • Take preventive measures. Educate your kids from an early age about proper oral hygiene. Correct brushing techniques and proper flossing can go a long way to make trips to the dentist a more pleasant experience. Watching their consumption of candy and other cavity-causing snacks can also help. Finally, regular professional cleanings and fluoride treatments are also effective.

  • Keep your child company. While in the dentist's chair, stay within your child's sight. If necessary, hold your child's hand. Without a friend or family member close by, children can be easily frightened in the dentist's chair.

  • Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Lack of sleep can fuel anxiety and discomfort on the morning of the appointment. If your child is well rested, you can reduce the stress of the experience and help your child get through the dental appointment.

  • Mind your child's diet. Studies have shown that children are more susceptible to cavities than adults due to their immature permanent tooth enamel. That's why it's recommended to make sure your child's diet includes foods that promote strong teeth, such as milk, cheese, yogurt and other calcium-rich foods.
  • By considering these simple tips, you can reduce your child's stress when going to the dentist. By creating a positive experience early on, you can help your child maintain healthy teeth and a beautiful smile.
